The interdisciplinary Master of Science in Informatics at UL Lafayette is designed to prepare you to design and implement computing and information technology solutions in a range of industries and organizations with concentrations in:
- Informatics Generalist,
- Cybersecurity,
- Data science, and
- Health Informatics.
Offered either 100% online or on campus, the master's in informatics program focuses on the information technology aspect of enterprise computing. You’ll develop expertise in data analytics and visualization, machine learning, database management, cybersecurity and IT risk management, networking and computer communications, human-computer interaction, and program development, and more.
Computing across industries
In our informatics graduate program, we emphasize scholarly research and the scientific method for applied computing and information technologies. Our aim is to guide you in the design, maintenance, and adaptation of information systems that solve problems pertinent to human needs.
Our faculty members’ research and expertise span from bioinformatics to cloud computing, computational thinking, human-computer interaction, the internet and web, network science, machine learning, and modeling and simulation, to name a few. Learn more about our computing and informatics research.

Courses & Curriculum
To earn your Master of Science in Informatics, you must complete the 33-hour curriculum, which includes the opportunity to pursue a thesis or go with a non-thesis track of study.
Our online program includes both 8-week and 16-week course options, ideal for working professionals.
All students gain advanced informatics and computing skills though courses in:
- human-computer interaction
- network infrastructures
- systems development
Concentration areas in Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Health Informatics build on that Informatics foundation with courses exploring:
- IT security and cryptography
- data analysis and visualization
- distributed databases
- cloud computing
- big data applications
- population health
- analysis, modeling, and design
Those in the Informatics Generalist concentration can choose from Informatics electives, as well as courses in other disciplines such as biology, business, geology, mathematics, physics, and psychology, to name a few.

Admission Requirements
In addition to the general admission requirements of the Graduate School, you must also meet the following requirements to be considered for admission:
- A bachelor’s degree in any field
- A resume or CV

Completion of survey of calculus and statistics. Those courses at UL Lafayette are:
- MATH 250
- STAT 325 or 427
The GRE is not required for admission to the M.S. in Informatics program.
Substitutions for general undergraduate course requirements may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Graduate Coordinator at the time of application.

Internship & Research Opportunities
The School of Computing and Informatics has partnered with businesses and organizations in the region, including medical/health care, oil and gas, information technology, and transportation/distribution to provide internships for on-campus students in the master’s in informatics program.
The School of Computing and Informatics is also home to the Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS) and is affiliated with the Informatics Research Institute, both of which conduct research in advanced computing and data science, respectively. Students in the informatics graduate program engage with faculty committed to cutting-edge research and technology transfer.
Career Opportunities for Informatics Graduates
Informatics and computing are among the fastest growing professions in the country. In fact, the national job outlook for computing and information technology occupations is expected to grow faster than average (i.e., about 10%, depending upon the specific occupation) between now and the year 2029, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As a graduate with your master’s in informatics, you’ll be highly skilled, technically trained, and extremely employable in both Louisiana and across the country.
